Driver Safety Program

Had any close calls driving lately? Now that you are retired you are of an age that falls into a group of drivers who have changing skills.

AARP offers a drivers safety program aimed at improving driver safety for people over 50 years old. The course is designed to help you tune up your driving skills, update your knowledge of the rules, learn about normal age-related physical changes, reduce your traffic violations, crashes, and chances for injury, and make you an overall safer driver.

This course may also qualify your for an auto insurance discount. The State of Michigan passed a law in January 2007 to allow insurance companies to provide a discount for an approved senior driver safety program. To date I have verified that GMAC, Auto -Owners and Farm Bureau offer this discount but you will want to check with your insurance company as this status changes each month.

There are several ways to take the AARP course:

Join a class. You can find a local class through AARP at www.aarp.org and click on the driver safety link. You can also do this by phone at 1 888 227 7669.

Take the AARP driver safety course online. Use the above link and click on driver safety.

Consider taking this class not just for the discount but also for the safety of you and your family.
