Dear Ms Barclay;
     It was with great interest I read your letter of October 3, 2003 asking for the help of retirees in writing representatives for North Carolina asking for their vote in passing a Medicare prescription drug bill.  I can understand GM position when they are required to spend nearly $1.5 billion a year on prescription drugs.  I don't think it's asking too much for retirees to mobilize when a problem is at hand and representatives need to be influenced of all sides of an issue.  I have when asked, written to State and Federal officials on behalf of GM.  I remember when living in California I wrote every possible person concerning GM's position on the Clean Air Pollution and alternate fuel requirements.

     I do however have a question regarding the Proposed Medicare prescription drugs legislation and how it will effect me personally?  Rumor has it that "many of the large corporations" are doing everything possible to get his legislation passed with the insertion of wordage which eliminate companies from paying or co-paying for retirees and their families.  Conversation and articles written about this legislation, we the retirees would have to co-pay substantially more on each and every drug and pay an up front fee to participate in the program.  Incidentally, my retirement is the same now as it was sixteen years ago and the cost of living has risen dramatically.  This is not true for hourly retirees under a Union Program.

     Inasmuch as you are knowledgeable of the pending legislation, would you furnish to me what is proposed rather than to ask my help not knowing these conditions and the contents.  I frankly want more specific information to make an educated endorsement.

     Awaiting your reply.

Sincerely

E. W. Method, Jr. (Retired)
