MEMORANDUM

TO:               KATHLEEN S. BARCLAY, V.P. GLOBAL HUMAN RESOURCES
FROM:         HENRY E. KNIGHT
SUBJECT: HEALTHCARE BENEFITS
DATE:         OCTOBER 29, 2002

My name is Henry E. Knight.  I worked for General Motors for 34.6 years.  With 28.6 of these years as a Production Supervisor.  I retired September 1, 1987, when they closed the old Assembly Plant in St. Louis.  Prior to the closing, General Motors asked me as a favor to remain until the plant closed in order to keep from bringing in new people.

I had been a dedicated General Motors employee all of these years.  I worked 15 years without missing a days work.  I had an injury in the plant and an operation once.  Other than this, I was on the job constantly.  Since I retired, General Motors has raised the price of their products dramatically.  I know because I drive them.  In 1988, I along with another Retiree formed the "Salaried Retirees Club" in St. Louis.  I was President for 6 years.

Since I retired approximately 48% of the people I retired with are dead.  I have had approximately 20 or better recorded referrals in the Ambassadors Club.  My pension is still the same as when I retired.  General Motors has not increased it at all.  I am now 73 years old and retired for 15 years.  I work part-time for a Golf Management Company in order to make insurance meet.

The hourly Union people who worked for me constantly taunted me about having better healthcare coverage than I do.  General Motors always told me not to worry.  They would take care of their dedicated salaried people.  As soon as I retired, they tried to take away my Health Benefits like so many other Corporations.  I trusted General Motors and could have gone back into the Union, but believed every word I was told.  A lot of salaried people have retired in recent years and were given very lucrative retirements.  Far better than mine.  "NOTE" Medicare is my Primary Insurance carrier and General Motors is Secondary.  Yet, every letter I get from General Motors is crying poor mouth or you are taking something away from me.

Good business people always figure the cost of their product to take care of costs to produce the product and their retirees.  Now I ask you.  "Who is to be Trusted"?  Please leave us old people alone and let us die with less pain and dignity.
