Minutes of the conference call with Governor Jennifer Granholm of Michigan
April 29, 2009

The GM, Chrysler, Ford, and Delphi salaried retiree group presidents had a phone meeting with Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and her automotive specialist, Fred Hoffman. The governor was very interested in the results of the Auto Task Force meeting the four of us had with Ron Bloom last Friday. She was extremely empathetic to the plight of salaried retirees, especially Delphi, and offered her full support. She was appalled with the situation we are all facing as salaried retirees, and advised she will keep our interest in mind in all of her efforts related to the automotive industry activities.

It was stated that salaried retirees should have equitable treatment concerning our health benefits. We discussed our pension plans and the possibilities that could occur in the event of a bankruptcy. We all agreed every effort should be made to keep these funds out of the hands of the PBGC (government agency that takes over funds). She assured us she would make every effort to support our salaried retirees’ funds. Remember, each of the auto companies pension funds are different and will probably be treated that way.

Here are some facts we discussed with the Governor as they relate to the GM pension fund:

Hello to the members of Over The Hill Car People, LLC - General Motors National Retiree Association and all GM retirees!

We did attend a meeting with President Obama's Auto Task Force Team in Washington on April 24, 2009.  Mr. Ron Bloom, a senior executive on the Federal Automotive Task Force, was present for this meeting.  He is one of the leaders of the Presidential Auto Task Force Team selected by President Obama to assist with the restructuring of the American Auto Industry.  He has spent 25 years of his career helping reorganize companies near bankruptcy. Wagoner: No Need to Cut Benefits to Retirees
Last Edited: Thursday, 08 Jan 2009, 9:05 AM EST Created: Thursday, 08 Jan 2009, 8:08 AM EST

NEW YORK (AP) -- General Motors Corp. Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said Thursday the Detroit automaker can survive long-term without cutting benefits to retired workers.

Wagoner made the remarks on NBC's "Today" show, where he was joined by United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger. The two made the appearance from Warren, Mich., ahead of their renewed labor negotiations scheduled to begin next week.

The $13.4 billion federal loan package granted to GM last month requires that the UAW make concessions and also demands that GM submit a restructuring plan to the government by March 31.

Wagoner said he is confident both sides will reach agreement on changes needed to the company's labor contract.  "I'm confident that we'll come together and get the kind of changes that we need," Wagoner said.

Gettelfinger said the union will ensure that "what we do is done in the best interest of our members as well as our retirees."

Wagoner added that the much-cited $10-an-hour wage difference between GM autoworkers and workers at U.S. plants owned by foreign automakers is overstated, saying "it may be a little on the high side." He said productivity at the company's factories is among the highest in North America.

Wagoner also said that despite criticism he faced at the time, he never considered resigning during the bailout hearings that took place in November and December, even if it would have improved the bailout's chance of passing. He also reiterated that GM had set aside discussions with rival Chrysler LLC about a possible merger.

The White House approved $4 billion in loans for Chrysler last month, with loans for both automakers being funded by the $700 billion Wall Street bailout package passed last year.

Both companies are struggling for survival in an industry that is in the midst of its worst sales slump in decades. On Monday, GM said its U.S. auto sales in December fell 31 percent while Chrysler's sales plunged 53 percent.

General Motors reports record sales in Europe thanks to growth in Russia, Eastern Europe

DETROIT (AP) -- Despite trouble on the home front, General Motors Corp.. is booming in Europe.

GM said Wednesday it recorded record sales of nearly 1.2 million vehicles in Europe in the first six months of this year. That is an increase of 3 percent over last year.

GM's sales grew 58 percent in Eastern Europe and 60 percent in Russia, offsetting a weaker market in Spain and Italy. Even Hummer, a brand GM is considering selling because of slow U.S. sales, saw a 21 percent jump in Russia.

GM says its European market share remained steady at 9.5 percent.

General Motors holds off Toyota in June US sales

General Motors holds off Toyota in June sales, but reports drop of 18.2 percent

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors Corp.. outsells Toyota Motor Corp. in June to retain its traditional U.S. sales lead, even though GM says its sales dropped 18.2 percent for the month.

Toyota sales had fallen 21.4 percent for the month. Both companies were hurt by a sluggish economy and poor sales of trucks and sport utility vehicles.

GM on Tuesday reported selling 262,329 vehicles for the month, compared with Toyota's 193,234.

For the first half of the year, GM sales were down 16.3 percent compared with the year-ago period. Toyota sales were down 6.8 percent for the first six months of the year.
